Sports and Recreation

IES has a reputation for innovative sports facility design. Our work integrates long-span structures, cantilevered and suspended jogging tracks and corrosion protection for indoor aquatic centers — complexity that calls for detailed vibration analysis and in-depth structural engineering expertise. We take pride in helping create public gathering spaces which establish a sense of place for the unique communities that we live and work within.

The SWISD Aquatics Facility is a 57,208-square-foot public school natatorium that provides SWISD students with opportunities for swimming instruction and competitions. The facility includes a 50-meter competition pool, constructed using innovative Myrtha modular stainless steel and PVC technology. This pool has eight 50-meter competition lanes, as well as twenty-three 25-yard cross-course lanes, offering ample space for swimming and diving activities. The pool’s versatile design can be adjusted to accommodate water polo practices and competitions. Two movable bulkheads, measuring 4 feet and 6 feet respectively, further enhance the pool’s flexibility.

In addition to the competition pool, the facility has a 2,300-square-foot teaching pool. This pool includes four 25-yard lap lanes, allowing for learn-to-swim programs and fitness/wellness activities. With ramp and stair entry options, accessibility is a priority, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the benefits of swimming.

The structural design utilizes sloped bowstring trusses to clear span the facility and provide a column-free experience. The trusses are elevated on one end, to give interior space over elevated seating and positioned to allow the exterior curved side to face the predominant southeast breezes. Through large overhead doors on the low side of the barrel vault roof and large louvers on the high, bleacher, side of the roof, this building is primarily naturally ventilated.
