The Difference between Civil and Structural
There are many branches within the engineering field. The four major disciplines include Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering. Under the general category of Civil engineering falls the specialty, Structural engineering. Although slightly different, there is some confusion between the two occupations.
Civil engineering and Structural engineering are two disciplines in the field of engineering which deal with evaluation, design construction and preservation of elements. Generally, structural engineering is an area of specialization under civil engineering. However, through the years, modern development in science and architecture has made structural engineering into a separate discipline.
Civil Engineering is the branch of engineering that specializes in the design and construction of structures such as bridges and roads. It is considered one of the oldest fields in engineering.
Structural engineering is the branch of engineering that involves the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of structures that reinforce or counteract loads, such as skyscrapers, dams and bridges.
Although both belong to the field of engineering, they differ in several aspects. Civil engineering is a broad subject that covers structural engineering and is a first degree course offered in universities, resulting in a Bachelor’s degree. However, structural engineering is a subject under civil engineering and is taught to students taking up the course. It is a specialization which leads to a master’s degree or a doctorate.
Civil engineering focuses on the design elements while structural engineering ensure that the materials being used for construction can support the design of the structure. They are both crucial to the construction industry so their differences and similarities is not that important. The important thing is that civil engineering and structural engineering services are provided by engineering firms to customers because they understand that they are both essential in project development and construction.
