Client Spotlight: Hospitality Projects

AT&T Center - Entrance

IES has delivered innovative and efficient designs for several types of hospitality projects and related facilities, including hotels, resorts, and other public meeting spaces. Our portfolio demonstrates an ability to meet the high expectations of hotel and resort developers, and to respect the uniqueness of their projects.

This project consisted of a new, 415-foot-tall facility located on the River Walk adjacent to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The 34-floor hotel includes 1,000 rooms between levels 6 and 24. Levels 25 through 34 contain 147 private condominiums with full access to the hotel’s amenities and services. The amenities include restaurants, cafes and bars at the water’s edge, a health club and swimming pool at level five, and a rooftop pool at level 32, and several rooftop cabanas at level 34 for condominium residents. The hotel includes more than 76,000 SF of meeting space (32,000 SF grand ballroom stacked above a 20,000 SF junior ballroom and 20 meeting rooms), and five levels of underground parking for 1,000 cars that extends 52 feet below street level.

The newly renovated 2,500 seat auditorium includes multiple elevated balconies, a basement with rehearsal halls, green rooms and meeting space all totaling 108,000 SF. The basement level of the theatre that is adjacent to the San Antonio River Walk was remodeled to include meeting rooms and pre-function space that spills out onto the San Antonio River to create a venue for business meetings, weddings and banquets.

The transformation of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center expansion includes approximately 835,030 SF of proposed new construction and 73,800 SF of renovated space modernizing the center into a world-class convention facility. The total area included in the convention center transformation consists of 913,330 SF. The new spaces of the expansion will include 515,000 SF of prime contiguous exhibit space, a 55,000 SF ballroom, meeting rooms and a dynamic entry lobby engaging the urban edge on Market Street.

The 750,000 SF, facility is a mid-size, multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex. The seating capacity for professional basketball is 18,500 seats. The facility has the capacity to host other events such as hockey and ice shows, arena football, indoor soccer, concerts, rodeo events, and other community events. Our firm provided the design of the foundation, Event Level floor systems, basement walls, underground truck bays and player parking, underground tunnel, portions of the Courtside Club Level floor framing, East Entry Bridge (36-ft wide by 86-ft long, post-tensioned, cast-in-place concrete pedestrian bridge) and trellis, and the West Plaza including the sombrilla shade structure. Structural systems include two-way flat slab on void box for the general Event Level spaces including the Marshalling area, two-way structural slab over void space at the ice floor, slab-on-potassium stabilized clay at the truck dock, two foot thick x 26′ clear span basement walls (truck bay walls as high as 30′), 30″ wide x 120″ deep x 105′ span post-tensioned concrete beams and girders at the truck dock roof, one-way slab and beam at the Courtside Club Level, pan-joist system at the East Entry Bridge, and steel deck supported by catenary shaped cables spanning 120′ from the building, across the West Plaza, to non-prismatic plate girders placed between buttressed columns.
